Nothing undermines a business call faster than poor audio. Choppy speech, echo, and delays tell the other party that your organization is disorganized — even when the substance of the conversation is excellent. The good news: professional call quality is not luck. It follows from two disciplines — bandwidth planning and quality-of-service configuration — applied consistently across the network.
Step One: Know Your Bandwidth Reality
Voice bandwidth consumption is predictable once you choose codecs:
| Codec | Typical Per-Call Consumption | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| G.711 | About 87 kbps with headers | Best quality, highest bandwidth |
| G.729 | About 31 kbps with headers | Good quality, half the bandwidth |
| Wideband (HD voice) | Higher than G.711 | Noticeably clearer where network supports it |
Multiply per-call consumption by your measured concurrent-call peak — not your extension count. A site with 100 extensions that never exceeds 12 simultaneous calls needs bandwidth for 12 calls plus headroom, not 100. Redstone platforms report real concurrent-call statistics, turning this estimate into a measurement.
Step Two: Prioritize Voice on the Network
Shared networks carry email, file transfers, and video alongside voice. When congestion hits, voice packets delayed even a fraction of a second produce audible degradation. QoS configuration fixes this by classifying and prioritizing real-time traffic:
- Classification and marking — voice packets tagged at the edge so every network device recognizes them
- Priority queuing — routers serve marked voice traffic ahead of bulk data
- Reserve-and-limit — adequate capacity guaranteed for voice; excess voice prevented from starving data
- WAN attention — prioritize on every hop, especially site-to-site links and internet circuits where congestion concentrates
Step Three: Manage the Voice-Specific Factors
Jitter and Delay
Adaptive jitter buffers on Redstone platforms absorb variable packet arrival — but the network should deliver consistent timing in the first place. Keep end-to-end delay within accepted voice bounds; every extra router hop and encryption layer adds latency, so design paths deliberately.
Echo
Echo cancellation handles acoustic and line echo on gateways and endpoints, but hardware problems — bad headsets, misconfigured analog connections — defeat software. When echo persists, investigate physical equipment before tuning software further.
Packet Loss
Even 1% sustained loss is audible. Track loss per site and per link; when it appears, fix the network cause rather than accepting degraded calls as normal.
Step Four: Monitor Continuously
Networks change — new applications, growing teams, circuit upgrades. Continuous monitoring of call-quality metrics (MOS scores, jitter, loss) per site catches degradation before users complain. Redstone management interfaces expose these metrics per call and per site, so IT teams see exactly where quality lives and where it slips.
Redstone assists with bandwidth assessments, QoS configuration guidance, and pre-deployment network readiness checks — because the right time to fix call quality is before the first important call.
Schedule a network readiness checkRedstone Systems, Inc. founded in Delaware, USA in December 2002, has been the ODM vendor for many well-known communications companies, serving the Southeast Asian market. In 2020, Redstone Systems will begin to return to the North America market with its self-developed brand.
Redstone has a complete product line of intelligent voice gateways, providing IP-PBXs, analog VoIP gateways (FXS/FXO), digital VoIP gateways (E1/T1), border appliances, and session boundary controllers (SBCs).
With advanced technology in digital signal processor (DSP), speech coding and speech processing, as well as efficient operational tools such as cloud remote management, auto provisioning, Redstone gateways are widely used in markets of enterprise communications, cloud communications, call centers, operators’ IMS/SIP trunks, bringing users friendly, efficient and reliable communication experience.
