Network Readiness for VoIP: Assessing Before You Deploy
A successful VoIP deployment starts with an honest network assessment. Voice traffic is less forgiving than data, so issues that go unnoticed with email and web browsing become audible call quality problems.
Bandwidth
Calculate required capacity based on peak concurrent calls and codec choice. Include headroom for other traffic and growth. Remember that bandwidth needs are for concurrent calls, not total extensions.
Latency and Jitter
Latency above 150 milliseconds becomes noticeable in conversation. Jitter, or variation in packet arrival time, causes choppy audio. Test these metrics across the expected call paths.
Packet Loss
Even small amounts of sustained packet loss degrade voice quality. The network should deliver voice packets with near-zero loss.
QoS Configuration
Implement QoS markings and priority queuing on every network device between endpoints and the SIP provider. Voice should be prioritized over bulk data.
Firewall and NAT
Verify that firewalls allow SIP signaling and RTP media in both directions. NAT traversal issues are a common source of one-way audio.
