SIP Trunk Capacity: How Many Channels Do You Actually Need
Trunk capacity is one of those numbers that is either over-provisioned, in which case nobody notices and nobody thanks anyone, or under-provisioned, in which case the failure is loud, customer-visible, and expensive to explain. Most organisations find out which side of the line they are on on the day of the peak they did not plan for. The cause is almost always the same: capacity was sized by habit rather than by measurement. This article covers how to measure real concurrency, how to plan for peaks, and what happens when the number is guessed.
Measure the Peak, Not the Average
The number that matters for trunk capacity is the highest genuine concurrency observed over a representative period, not the average. Averages are comfortable and useless; they make a system look adequate right up to the moment the peak arrives. Where historical data exists, it should be used. Where it does not, the honest answer is that capacity should be sized with a margin over an estimate, and reviewed as data arrives.
| What to know | Where to get it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Highest concurrent call observed | Call records over a representative period, including peak days | This is the number capacity must exceed |
| Busy-hour concurrency | Traffic patterns around known peaks | Distinguishes sustained peaks from spikes |
| Hold time and setup ratio | Call records | Concurrency is not the same as call count |
| Emergency traffic share | Call records | Emergency calls must not be counted against the same limit |
Peaks Are Planned Events or Surprises
Peaks divide into two kinds: the ones you can plan for, because they have a date and a reason, and the ones you cannot. Campaign launches, seasonal demand, and holidays are the first kind, and they should be included in capacity planning. The second kind is the surprise, and it is what the margin is for. The mistake is treating the two kinds the same: planning for surprises beyond the observed peak, while treating known peaks as optional.
- Size capacity above the highest observed concurrency, with a stated margin
- Include known peaks in the plan rather than treating them as exceptions
- Keep emergency and lifeline traffic separate from the same capacity pool
- Review capacity after any material change in call volume
- Know what happens when capacity is exceeded, rather than discovering it during an incident
Over-Provisioning Has a Price Too
The familiar risk is under-provisioning, but over-provisioning is not free either. Carriers charge per channel, and unused capacity is a recurring cost that nobody questions because it does not fail. The discipline is to size deliberately and revisit the number periodically, because the right capacity for a business is not the right capacity two years later.
Redstone Approach
Redstone supports trunk capacity analysis on the REX IP-PBX platform, including measurement of observed concurrency, peak identification from call records, and capacity recommendations with a stated margin. Our teams can help you review current trunk provision against real traffic, plan for known peaks, and document the capacity position so it can be defended at renewal. Carrier arrangements remain yours; we scope analysis and planning work in writing.
Redstone Systems, Inc. founded in Delaware, USA in December 2002, has been the ODM vendor for many well-known communications companies, serving the Southeast Asian market. In 2020, Redstone Systems will begin to return to the North America market with its self-developed brand.
Redstone has a complete product line of intelligent voice gateways, providing IP-PBXs, analog VoIP gateways (FXS/FXO), digital VoIP gateways (E1/T1), border appliances, and session boundary controllers (SBCs).
With advanced technology in digital signal processor (DSP), speech coding and speech processing, as well as efficient operational tools such as cloud remote management, auto provisioning, Redstone gateways are widely used in markets of enterprise communications, cloud communications, call centers, operators’ IMS/SIP trunks, bringing users friendly, efficient and reliable communication experience.
