VoIP Quality of Service Configuration Guide
Voice traffic is real-time and sensitive to delay, jitter, and packet loss. Quality of Service (QoS) configuration ensures voice traffic receives priority treatment on the network, maintaining call quality even during data-heavy activities.
Without QoS, a large file download can consume available bandwidth, causing voice packets to queue behind data packets. Callers experience choppy audio, delay, or dropped calls.
Voice VLAN Segmentation
The foundation of VoIP QoS is VLAN segmentation - separating voice and data traffic onto different virtual networks. Voice VLANs isolate phone traffic from data traffic, simplifying QoS application and improving security.
DSCP Marking
DSCP marking labels packets with priority information. Voice packets receive specific DSCP markings - typically EF (Expedited Forwarding) for voice media and CS3 for SIP signaling. These markings enable each switch and router to apply appropriate priority.
Priority Queuing on Switches
Switches implement QoS through priority queuing - processing high-priority packets before lower-priority packets. Strict priority queuing sends all voice packets immediately before any data packets.
QoS on WAN Links
WAN links connecting sites or connecting to SIP trunk providers need QoS configuration on routers. Bandwidth allocation should reserve sufficient capacity for voice traffic based on expected concurrent calls.
