VoIP Power Requirements and Backup Power Solutions
Unlike traditional analog phones that draw power from telephone lines, IP phones require separate power sources. This shift means power planning becomes a critical part of VoIP deployment.
Redstone IP-PBX systems and compatible IP phones support Power over Ethernet (PoE), simplifying deployment by delivering both data connectivity and electrical power through a single Ethernet cable.
Power over Ethernet (PoE)
PoE delivers power through standard Ethernet cables, eliminating separate power supplies for each IP phone. Standard PoE (IEEE 802.3af) delivers up to 15.4 watts per port. PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) delivers up to 30 watts for devices needing more power.
UPS for VoIP Systems
Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) provide battery backup during power outages. The IP-PBX appliance, network switches, and internet modem should all connect to UPS units. A typical deployment might require 500-1000VA UPS capacity for 15-30 minutes of runtime.
Generator Backup for Extended Outages
For organizations requiring communication during extended power outages, backup generators provide indefinite power. Organizations should test backup power regularly with monthly UPS tests and annual generator tests under load.
