Why Bandwidth Calculation Matters
Insufficient bandwidth causes poor call quality, dropped calls, and frustrated users. Calculating VoIP bandwidth needs before deployment prevents these problems. Proper planning ensures voice traffic coexists with other network activities.
Basic Calculation Method
Start with the number of concurrent calls your business handles. Multiply this by the bandwidth per call for your chosen codec. Add approximately 20% for network overhead. The result is your minimum VoIP bandwidth requirement.
Codec Bandwidth Examples
G.711 codec uses approximately 87.2 kbps per call in each direction. G.729 uses about 31.2 kbps per call. Wideband codecs for HD voice may use up to 101.6 kbps. Codec choice significantly impacts total bandwidth needs.
Accounting for Overhead
Network protocols add overhead beyond the voice payload. IP, UDP, and RTP headers consume additional bandwidth. The 20% overhead estimate covers this protocol overhead and ensures adequate capacity for voice traffic.
Simultaneous Data Traffic
VoIP shares your internet connection with other activities. File downloads, video streaming, and cloud applications compete for bandwidth. Ensure total available bandwidth exceeds the sum of voice and data requirements during peak usage.
Quality of Service Implementation
Quality of Service settings prioritize voice traffic over data. Even with adequate bandwidth, QoS prevents call quality degradation when data usage spikes. Configure QoS on routers and switches to protect voice communications.
Future Growth Considerations
Calculate bandwidth needs based on expected growth, not just current usage. Adding capacity during initial deployment costs less than upgrading later. Plan for at least 25% headroom above calculated requirements to accommodate growth.
